Gorilla Trekking Rules

Gorilla Trekking Rules in Uganda and Rwanda

.

Gorilla trekking rules are essential to preserving the endangered mountain gorillas and ensuring a safe, rewarding experience for visitors. Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife adventure that is carefully regulated to protect these remarkable primates. Before entering the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or Volcanoes National Park, all travelers are required to understand and strictly follow the established gorilla trekking guidelines.

General Gorilla Trekking Rules

In both Uganda and Rwanda, visitors must be 15 years and above to participate in gorilla trekking. A maximum of eight trekkers are allowed to visit a gorilla family per day, and the encounter is limited to one hour. This minimizes stress on the gorillas and reduces the risk of disease transmission.

Tourists are required to keep a minimum distance of 7 meters (about 21 feet) from the gorillas at all times. If a gorilla approaches you, remain calm and follow your guide’s instructions. Flash photography is strictly prohibited, and loud noises or sudden movements are discouraged.

Health and Safety Guidelines

Anyone showing signs of illness, such as flu or cough, is not permitted to trek. Mountain gorillas share up to 98% of human DNA, making them highly vulnerable to human diseases. Visitors must also avoid eating, drinking, or smoking near gorillas and are required to bury human waste properly in the forest.

Rules Specific to Uganda and Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda enforce similar regulations, but Rwanda’s permits are more expensive, reflecting its high-end conservation model. Both countries require trekkers to attend a mandatory briefing before the trek and to follow ranger instructions at all times.

By respecting these gorilla trekking rules in Uganda and Rwanda, visitors help protect these magnificent primates while enjoying a safe and unforgettable safari experience
